A large part of the fjord is part of the Skjoldungernes Land National Park, and there’s never far to idyllic nature.

Additionally, you can experience plenty of life on the water in Roskilde Fjord as the fjord is rich in birdlife, abuzz with outdoor enthusiasts on the water, as well as sailed by “Viking ships” from the Viking Ship Museum.

Best places to SUP in Fjordlandet

Vigen Strandpark

Explore Roskilde Fjord from the beautiful Vigen Strandpark, which offers green beach meadows and a lovely sandy beach, complete with a wooden pier extending into the fjord. From the water you can enjoy a unique view of Roskilde, where a UNESCO World Heritage site stand tall in the form of Roskilde Cathedral and Viking ships set sail from the Viking Ship Museum.

You can start your trip by paddling up to Veddelev Havn and cross over to Kattinge Vig, where you’ll find shelter in the idyllic inlet that borders Boseurp Forest – perfectly suited for a pause.

Gershøj havn

With easy and convenient access to the water at the harbor and well-equipped facilities on land, it’s easy to get started with your water journey at Gershøj Havn.

Once you’re on the water, you can head north towards Møllekrogen and Selsø Castle, enjoying the peaceful trip and the picturesque landscape. Alternatively, set your course south towards Lejre Vig and experience the fantastic surroundings along the route.

Marbæk Strandpark

Frederikssund

Beautiful scenery awaits at Marbæk Strandpark, which is an ideal starting point for your SUP-experience in Frederikssund. Here you can easily and conveniently launch your SUP board and quickly get out on the water.

You can start by paddling north and experience Marbæk Havn. Take a detour through the canal at Enghusene and continue to Frederikssund Havn where you can enjoy the cozy harbor atmosphere. Optionally, finish with a break at the lovely local harbor bath.

“Downwind” refers to a specific type of paddling where the paddler utilizes the wind to move in a particular direction. When paddleboarding “downwind,” it means moving with the wind at your back, making it easier to glide forward on the water.

To paddle “downwind” effectively, it requires a good understanding of the wind direction and strength, as well as skill in controlling the board and reacting to waves and wind conditions along the way. It’s an exciting and challenging technique that demands both skills and experience in the sport of SUP.

DownWind in Fjordlandet

There are excellent opportunities for Downwind SUP on Roskilde Fjord, typically with westerly winds, from Gershøj to Salvadparken or Veddelev depending on the wind direction. However, note that Downwind is recommended only for experienced SUP’ers.

Safety

When you are stand up paddling, it is essential that you are aware of certain safety elements. With the following 5 basic rules, we want to help you have a safe trip on the water.

1. ALWAYS use a leash (rope that connects you to the board)

2. Remember to wear a PFD/life jacket (it’s illegal to paddle without)

3. Bring your phone in a waterproof bag

4. Don’t go alone on the water and inform someone where you will go and when you expect to return.

5. ALWAYS check wind and weather conditions before going out. Do not go out in offshore winds if you are a beginner or slightly experienced.
