Frederikssund Viking experiences

Enter the World of the Vikings at Vikingebopladsen in Frederikssund, which is an 'open-air museum' and which can be visited free of charge. Every summer there is a "Frederikssund Viking Game" which is performed in the open air.

The vikings settlement in Frederikssund

Visit the settlement during autumn, winter and spring, where the whole settlement is buzzing with life to the many viking-market events which are inviting families to participate in different viking- activities.

“Vikingespillet” – The annual play

If you visit Frederikssund at the end of June and the beginning of July, you can experience the Viking Age being brought to life during the annual “Vikingespillet”, where approx. 250 adults and children pull on Viking costumes and everything is just like when the Vikings sailed on Roskilde Fjord, went to war, traded and sacrificed to the Nordic gods.

The beautiful outdoor scene forms the setting for a theatrical performance that recreates the colors, people and drama of the Viking Age. The action of the Viking Games is based on Danish Viking legends and myths.

In addition to the Viking game, you can also experience a real market atmosphere and a wealth of fun and exciting activities for the whole family.

At the Viking settlement, a host of fun and exciting activities take place throughout the year waiting for the whole family.

Autumn holidays: Market and familyday

Saturday 23. oct. 2021, at 11am – 4pm.

Family day and market during the autumn holidays

It is possible to buy swords, shields, jewelry, skins, handmade wood products, stones, fabric, yarn, honey, mead and much more.

Coffee, cake and sausages, beer and water are sold.

The children can both paint shields, try the Vikings ‘games, get rides on the Viking Games’ Icelandic horses, watch the fencers fight, and you can compete, as the Vikings did. You can also shoot with a bow and arrow.

Traditional Viking winter market

Saturday 11. dec 2021, at 12.30pm – 5pm

There will be mulled wine, cocoa and hot beer liqueur. Pancakes, sausages and pork roast sandwiches, smoked eel, fried salted herring, roasted almonds and more. If you are looking for a very special Christmas gift, stop by and see the large selection of Viking jewelery, leather goods and wicker.

The Viking game is a great experience for both children and adults! Here you can experience the dramatic stories from the Viking Age with the colors, people and drama of the Viking Age. The action of the Viking Games is based every year on Danish Viking legends and myths.

Since 1952, more than 250 adults and children each year have formed the framework of the annual Viking game. An open-air spectacle with suspense and drama, deadly fencing fights, women fighting – war and love, light effects and torchlight processions.

The Viking game takes place on Kalvøen (in the southwestern part of the city), where you will also find Frederikssund Vikingeboplads.
