The Pontoppidan route

The Pontoppidan Route is a cycling trail set in picturesque surroundings on the beautiful Hornsherred peninsula.

The Pontoppidan Route is a cycling trail set in picturesque surroundings on the beautiful Hornsherred peninsula.

Along the way, you’ll pass Selsø Castle, which lay dormant for nearly 150 years and now stands almost as it was when abandoned in 1829. You will also experience stunning nature in a varied Ice Age landscape featuring moraines, fascinating birdlife, and beautiful views over the fjord.

The route is named after the Danish author Henrik Pontoppidan (1857-1943), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1917 for “his authentic depictions of everyday life in Denmark,” particularly in the short story collection *From the Huts* and the novel *The Promised Land*. Both works are clearly inspired by daily life among the rural population and Pontoppidan’s experiences during the years he lived with his family in Østby on Hornsherred.

This cycling route is a 22 km journey through the beautiful Hornsherred peninsula as it appears today. While some things have changed, the landscape, church, rectory, and much more remain as they were in Pontoppidan’s time.

The Pontoppidan Route takes you past the postcard-perfect Selsø Church, through Skibby, and onwards to Skuldelev.

Most people can enjoy this route, which offers plenty of great stopping points along the way. There are many places where you can take a break and savor your coffee or packed lunch while surrounded by the beautiful nature and rich birdlife of the area.

Highlights of the Pontoppidan route:

Selsø Church

This beautiful old church is situated with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a sight worth seeing and a great place to park your bike to explore the area around Selsø Castle on foot.

Selsø Castle

At the end of a lovely linden tree-lined avenue, you’ll find this historic manor, a well-preserved example of Danish manor culture.
Abandoned in 1829 and only reoccupied 150 years later, the castle is now a time capsule of history. There’s also a small café offering local specialties.
Walking trails surround the castle, and you’ll find a nice covered area with tables and benches.

Hammervej

The small boat harbor at the end of Hammervej is another highlight of the route. Take a break, stroll among the small boats, and walk out on the pier to enjoy views of the fjord and the many small islands, “Jyllinge Holme,” where thousands of birds nest each year.
You can also enjoy your packed lunch or perhaps take a dip at the small beach just a few steps from the harbor.

Skuldelev Ridge (Østbyvej/Kildeskåret)
Skuldelev Ridge (Skuldelev Ås) is Denmark’s best-preserved ridge, formed by meltwater deposits during the Ice Age. Climb the small wooden staircase with 68 steps at Kildeskåret and enjoy a brisk walk with a stunning view of Roskilde Fjord.
