The Jyllinge Loop

Experience scenic cycling by Roskilde Fjord through historic landscapes, lush forests, and cultural heritage.

The eastern side of Roskilde Fjord offers a truly scenic cycling route that starts and ends in Jyllinge. From there, the route heads south through Tågerup and Kirketerp – where you can enjoy a coffee at the cozy Just Coffee or visit Snoremark, which produces apple mead and cider using fresh local ingredients.

Cycle through historic landscapes

During your bike ride, you will pass burial mounds that testify to life and death from thousands of years ago. At the same time, you can enjoy views of Roskilde Fjord and the narrow point known as “Peberrenden,” where five Viking ships, the Skuldelev ships, were sunk around the year 1040 to create a navigation barrier. The five Viking ships were excavated in 1962, and today you can experience them at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.

Discover Gundsømagle: A Natural Gem with Reed Beds and Birdlife

Also stop by Gundsømagle Lake and Nature Reserve, where a 300-meter-long boardwalk takes you through East Denmark’s largest reed beds. You’ll definitely feel transported to the Amazon rainforest in this jungle-like bird paradise. Along the way, you can rest on one of the many benches and enjoy a well-deserved break amidst the wildlife.

The trail to the reed beds follows a path through a troll-like forest with gnarled trees, offering opportunities to see birds, frogs, and various plants. You can also enjoy views from above from one of the birdwatching towers, which provide stunning vistas of the area. Keep an eye out for bearded tits, herons, or marsh harriers.

As you continue, you’ll pass Kirkerup Church, where you can stop to see unique 12th-century church paintings depicting rare scenes from both the Old and New Testaments.

The return route to Jyllinge takes you through the historic landscape of Gundsømagle, where the impressive long barrow Hødysse stands as one of the most visible remnants of the past. It is beautifully situated just east of the village of Gundsømagle.

Once you reach Jyllinge, you can celebrate the 22 kilometers you’ve covered with a coffee and cake from Café Fjordglimt. As the name suggests, this café also offers a lovely view over Roskilde Fjord. The southern end of Jyllinge Marina is another great spot to enjoy the atmosphere and views of Eskildsø.

Highlights of the Jyllinge Loop:

Gundsømagle lake
One of the tour’s absolute highlights is Gundsømagle Lake with its enchanting reed beds, where you can walk along well-maintained paths through the towering reeds and enjoy the lake’s unique birdlife. Park your bikes at the birdwatching tower and cross the boardwalk to the figure-eight trail in the lake, where you’ll experience a special sense of being one with nature.

Snoremark
Locally produced mead and cider made according to the principles of New Nordic Cuisine—using fresh, local ingredients that are naturally found in Denmark. In the summer, you can also rent a glamping tent and stay overnight in the midst of the apple orchard.

Cafe Fjordglimt
Jyllinge’s new exciting meeting spot, built and run by volunteers. Here, you can enjoy refreshments both indoors and outdoors, or you might be lucky enough to participate in one of the many intriguing events hosted at the venue.

Just coffee

Although the name suggests it’s “just” coffee, Just Coffee offers some of the best coffee in the region—available to enjoy on-site or to take home. This small, organic coffee roastery is operated with a focus on sustainable practices and delivers freshly roasted, certified coffee of the highest quality. It’s one of the best stops along the route.
