Roskilde’s fantastic history can be found both underground and above ground:
When the church was demolished by the Reformation, the tower was spared and became the “city tower”. It had a secular function in the life of the city – the bell and the place from which a firefighter was kept.
In 1731, the town hall, located in Algade, burned down. A new one was erected four years later, now placed in connection with the tower of St. Laurentius. The church tower became a town hall tower.
