According to ancient legends and sagas the Kingdom of Denmark came into being in Lejre
Only 40 min. by train and 30 min. by car from Copenhagen
From AD 600–950 the Scyldingas, Denmark’s first royal dynasty, ruled Lejre and are the ancestors of mythical kings like Skjold, Roar, Frode and Rolf Krake. According to legend, Beowulf also defeated the monster Grendel here.
Surrounded by history, the museum is located in a beautiful setting, where archaeological excavations in the last 30 years have unearthed findings that substantiate the myths and legends, convincingly placing Lejre among the most important sites of the Viking Age.
The remains of impressive royal halls were found in the village of Gl. Lejre. Close to the museum, which displays a rich array of artefacts, are the remains of one of Scandinavia’s largest stone ships.
