The world of myths and legends! - At Lejre Museum you can see the finds that today document Lejre as the home of Denmark's first kings.
Lejre was the center of power and royal seat in the Viking Age and in the Late Iron Age
– not just for a single king or for a short period, but for more than 500 years! Over the past three decades, excavation after excavation has added new pieces to the overall picture, which clearly shows that Lejre’s legendary kings must return to Danish history.
During the excavation of Denmark’s largest royal hall in Lejre, the archaeologists found a mysterious grave from the Viking Age.
The museum is housed in a four-length thatched farm “Hestebjerggård”, named after a nearby hill.
In the area close to the museum, you will find some of Denmark’s best-preserved ancient finds from the Viking Age, including a ship layout and five large “king halls”.
